RPG Acoustical Systems Launches SoniQ Technology for Acoustic Office Furniture

RPG Acoustical Systems introduces SoniQ, a new technology that integrates acoustic performance directly into wood-based office furniture like desks and storage items.

Office acoustics have long been addressed as an afterthought — panels on walls, ceiling baffles, carpet on floors. RPG Acoustical Systems is proposing a different approach with its new SoniQ technology: building acoustic performance directly into the furniture itself. The product line targets wood-based office furniture including desks, storage items, and vertical furniture, embedding sound absorption into objects that would otherwise simply reflect or transmit noise.

The premise addresses a practical challenge in workplace acoustic design: dedicated acoustic treatment requires dedicated space and a deliberate design decision. In many offices, especially those with open-plan layouts or limited wall surface, there's simply not enough room for conventional treatment to be effective. Furniture-integrated acoustics work within the existing footprint — every desk and storage unit becomes part of the acoustic solution rather than another hard surface contributing to the problem.

RPG Acoustical Systems has a long history in architectural acoustics, primarily in recording studios, performance spaces, and broadcast environments. The SoniQ launch represents an extension of that expertise into the commercial furniture market, which operates at a different price point and procurement channel than professional audio installations. The company appears to be betting that as hybrid work arrangements keep more employees in open offices — often noisier environments than the private offices they replaced — the demand for acoustic solutions at the furniture level will grow.

For facilities managers and interior designers, SoniQ represents a class of product that didn't previously exist: acoustic treatment disguised as ordinary furniture. Whether the market embraces it will depend on whether the acoustic performance justifies the price premium, but the concept itself addresses a real and underserved problem in workplace design.
