Western University's $9.2M Alumni Hall Renovation Displaces Mustangs Teams

A $9.2 million renovation of Alumni Hall at Western University moves basketball and volleyball teams to Thompson Arena through December 2026.

Western University's Mustangs basketball and volleyball teams will call Thompson Arena home this fall — at least temporarily. A $9.2 million renovation of Alumni Hall that began in May and is scheduled for completion in December 2026 has forced the relocation of both men's and women's squads for the first half of the upcoming academic year.

The renovation itself represents a significant upgrade to one of campus's most storied athletic venues. Alumni Hall will receive a new court, improved seating, modernized technology infrastructure, enhanced accessibility features, and long-overdue air conditioning. While the upgrades affect only the interior, construction is expected to impact building entrances and nearby sidewalks during the project's duration.

Western's Director of Sports & Recreation Christine Stapleton is optimistic that the temporary move won't diminish the game-day experience. "Alumni Hall has long been home to some of our most memorable Mustangs moments, and this renovation will help ensure we continue to provide exceptional spaces for student-athletes, fans, and the broader campus community for years to come," she said in a press release. To preserve energy in the interim venue, Western is introducing "super weekends" — scheduling basketball and volleyball home games together to create high-intensity, multi-sport event weekends at Thompson Arena.

The timing has long-term implications beyond basketball and volleyball. Once the renovation is complete, Alumni Hall will serve as temporary classroom space while a new Bioconvergence Center is constructed in the area currently occupied by the Molecular Biology Building, Kresge Building, and Natural Sciences Centre — a project not expected to conclude until 2031. Athletic facilities, it turns out, rarely renovate in a vacuum.
