Houston Rockets Transform Boys & Girls Club Into Community Sports Hub

The Houston Rockets unveil a major renovation at the Fort Bend Boys & Girls Club, featuring a refurbished gymnasium, technology center, and esports lounge.

The Houston Rockets organization held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week at the Fort Bend Boys & Girls Club to mark the completion of a sweeping renovation project that transforms the facility into a multi-dimensional community resource. The upgrades include a refurbished gymnasium, a "Rockets Technology Center," and a "Rockets E-Sports Lounge" — a combination designed to address both physical fitness and digital literacy for local youth.

The project is part of the Rockets' broader strategy to embed the organization's brand and values into Houston's community infrastructure. Custom graphics showcasing the team's new branding appear on the court and backboards, making the facility feel like an extension of the Rockets franchise. Former players Steve Francis and Rafer Alston attended the ceremony alongside current team leadership, while WNBA Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes represented the Comets.

Rockets President of Business Operations Gretchen Sheirr articulated the philosophy behind the investment: "We try to find places where, at the core, the game of basketball can be played. And then we look at ancillary opportunities. It's really not just about the game of basketball, but all of the life lessons that you learn." That framing — sport as a gateway to broader development — is reflected in the facility's design, where the esports lounge and technology center sit alongside the gymnasium rather than replacing it.

Several members of the Fertitta family, which owns the Rockets, were also in attendance, underscoring the ownership group's personal investment in the project. The renovation illustrates a growing trend among professional sports franchises: using facility improvements in underserved communities not just as philanthropy, but as a strategic way to build lasting local relationships and expand the sport's next generation of participants.
